GM, led by CEO Mary Barra, tends to be the U.S. automaker most affected by strikes, historically speaking. During past work stoppages, GM has experienced 94% of total lost worker days among the Big Three U.S. auto manufacturers, Barclays said. The trading pattern for GM shares during walkouts has been somewhat predictable. GM has so far followed this trend, with shares barely changed on the year, compared with a 15% gain for the S & P 500 . in the eventual agreement that create an amount in excess of this would likely negatively impact post-strike stock performance," Levy said.

It's time to take some profits after Tesla's recent rally, Barclays said Wednesday. After seeing some downward pressure following its first-quarter earnings report in April, Tesla has surged 80% from that month's lows. "We believe the stock's recent rally can be best explained by the market's current AI-driven thematic trade, as well as excitement over recent announcements to open the TSLA Supercharger network to other brands," he said in a note to clients Wednesday. "Yet while we aren't surprised that the stock has participated in the rally, we believe it is prudent to move to the sidelines." But he said right now, fundamentals may be overlooked as investors buy into stocks with exposure to artificial intelligence amid skyrocketing interest in the technology.

DETROIT – When a company beats Wall Street's earnings expectations and raises guidance amid recessionary fears and other economic concerns, you would expect the stock to rally. Wall Street analysts say eroding pricing power, labor concerns and challenges in producing electric vehicles, will make it harder for GM to perform at the profitability levels it has been. Record-high vehicle profits and prices, achieved during historically low vehicle inventory levels and resilient consumer demand, are starting to normalize. GM CFO Paul Jacobson said Tuesday that the company expects flat pricing compared to last year. He said consumers paid an average of $50,263 per vehicle in the U.S. during the quarter, off 1% from a year earlier.
Tesla stock fell 7% on Monday after the company announced its first quarter vehicle deliveries. Tesla delivered 422,900 vehicles last quarter, which was ahead of Wall Street's 421,500 estimate. The stock fell as Tesla vehicle inventory surged, suggesting to some analysts that they need to enact more price cuts to spark demand. "Incremental price cuts likely needed amid inventory build, especially as production at Austin and Berlin ramps [higher]," Levy said. Analysts at Bernstein also suggested that more price cuts could be needed if Tesla wants to achieve its volume targets.
Tesla shares fell more than 7% on Monday after the company's quarterly deliveries report led some investors to worry that more price cuts will be needed to drive sales, eating into margins. The record numbers represented 4% growth in deliveries from the prior period and followed repeated price cuts in the U.S., China and Europe. Sacconaghi said, "The key question for investors is what might margins be, amid significant price cuts but improving commodity costs?" According to FactSet, analyst were expecting Tesla to report deliveries of around 432,000 vehicles for the quarter. He wrote that "incremental price cuts likely needed," especially as the company ramps up production at new factories in Austin, Texas, and outside of Berlin.
Production is expected to have risen as the automaker ramped up production at new factories in Texas and Berlin, and as China production recovered from a COVID-19 lockdown hit. Analysts expect Tesla to further lower prices as many automakers have matched the price cuts and concerns about a weakening economy persist. Musk said in January that the price cuts stoked demand, playing down concerns about a weak economy. In China, Tesla's retail sales totaled 106,915 units in the year to March 19, one of the best quarters on record, according to data from China Merchants Bank International. Tesla's price cuts in China ignited a price war, with Chinese rivals including BYD (002594.SZ) and Xpeng (9868.HK) dropping prices.

It's time to sell Generac amid greater macro challenges this year, according to Truist. Analyst Jordan Levy downgraded shares to hold from buy, saying higher interest rates and inflation hurt the outlook for the power generator maker. "Adjusting our ests to reflect a slower recovery in HSB & clean energy sales, we now forecast FY23 revs/EBITDA ~3%/~9% below the Street respectively," Levy added. Generac shares are higher this year, up 25% in 2023, outperforming the S & P 500's gain.
